Known in the trade as Taint/Tabor, and in most UK yards simply as old rolled. Clean mixed old alloy sheet — and one of the easiest grades to lose money on through contamination.

What old rolled aluminium is
Old rolled aluminium is clean, mixed old alloy aluminium sheet, carrying the ISRI designation Taint/Tabor. It covers sidings, gutters, cladding, roofing sheet and general wrought sheet of two or more alloys, recovered from buildings, vehicles and general demolition.
The two names describe the same material. Taint/Tabor is the ISRI code used on international contracts and shipping documents; old rolled is what it is called across the counter in a UK yard. If you have been offered a price for one, you have been offered a price for the other.
The defining characteristic is that it is rolled — wrought sheet, not cast. That distinction is the whole basis of the grade, because sheet and castings belong to different alloy families and go to different outlets.
What the grade excludes
A shipment must be free of foil, venetian blinds, castings, hair wire and screen wire, food and beverage containers, radiator shells, aircraft sheet, oil and excessive dirt.
Attachments are tolerated only within agreed limits, typically around five per cent. Rivets, small steel fixings and residual paint are normal on genuine old sheet and are accounted for in the price rather than treated as a rejection.
The items that cause the most trouble in practice are castings mixed into sheet, and aluminium radiator shells. Both look plausible to an untrained eye and both change what the load is worth.
Why cast and rolled are kept apart
Rolled sheet is wrought alloy — the 1000, 3000 and 5000 series predominate — and its value lies in going back into sheet ingot or being used as a diluent in secondary alloy production.
Castings are a different animal: higher silicon, different alloy chemistry, destined for foundry alloys such as LM24 and ADC12. Mixing the two forces the buyer to treat the whole load as the lower-value fraction, because separating it after the fact costs more than the difference.
This is why a segregated load of old rolled will always out-earn the same tonnage tipped in with cast. Separation at source is the single most profitable handling decision on this grade.
How it is bought and priced
Old rolled is bought baled, loose or briquetted. Price is set against the aluminium market with a deduction reflecting alloy mix, attachments and moisture, and is confirmed against the material rather than a description.
Photographs of a representative load are usually enough to give a firm indication before anything moves. Where a shipment is borderline between old rolled and mixed castings, it is graded on inspection and priced accordingly, in writing, before collection.

Is old rolled the same as Taint/Tabor?
Yes. Taint/Tabor is the ISRI designation used on export contracts; old rolled is the everyday UK trade name for the same material — clean mixed old alloy aluminium sheet. Both refer to wrought sheet of two or more alloys, free of castings, foil and containers.
Does painted aluminium sheet still count as old rolled?
Yes. Painted and coated sheet such as cladding and gutters is normal within the grade, and the coating is accounted for in the price. Heavily coated or laminated sheet is assessed separately, because the non-metallic fraction is higher.
What is the difference between old rolled and Zorba?
Old rolled is hand-sorted wrought sheet. Zorba is shredded mixed non-ferrous recovered from a fragmentiser, containing aluminium alongside copper, brass and zinc. They are different products with different buyers and prices.
Will aluminium cans be accepted in an old rolled shipment?
No. Used beverage cans are their own grade and food and beverage containers are specifically excluded from Taint/Tabor. Cans should be kept separate; they are readily bought on their own.
How much contamination is tolerated?
Attachments are usually accepted to around five per cent by agreement. Beyond that the shipment is regraded rather than rejected, and priced on what it actually is.
